Environmental Film Festival 2025

Thu 16 - Thu 23 October

Australia's premier environmental cinema showcase returns, with features, shorts, documentaries, cine-art, talks, community activities and more!

Environment is Everwhere.

Palace Kino, Trocadero Projects, Wildflower Video Bar, Bobbie Peels, Elwood Beach

Experience 23 films over 8 days, including 13 premiere screenings, across 3 venues.

Environmental Film Festival is back, running 16-23 October and celebrating our 15th year by returning to the cinema where we first started, Palace Kino!

Enjoy Australia's premier environmental cinema showcase, with features, shorts, documentaries, cine-art, talks, community activities and more. This year's theme is 'Environment Is Everywhere', exploring ideas of urban living, nature and beyond, with the best eco-cinema from around the world.

Traversing the city, with screenings at Palace Kino, Trocadero Projects and Wildflower Video Bar, the program spans Indigenous stories of power and activism, local reflections on landscape and colonisation, breathtaking tales of the city and living environments, and an inspiring portrait of a musician and her father, with an idea that might just save the planet.

Our program always goes beyond the screen, with impactful talks and opportunities to connect, and this year is no different. With filmmaker panels, receptions and a special community action event, audiences have the opportunity to go further, meet changemakers and keep the conversation going. Plus, at the centre of the fest, we’ll be commemorating our 15th Birthday, with a special Anniversary Party.

In this time of climate crises, reconsider the world around you through a series of incredible films and events, because Environment Is Everywhere.

Presented by | Environmental Films Australia, Monash University and Dr Bronner’s.

Supported by | Hot House Magazine, Trocadero Projects, Palace Kino, Wildflower Video Bar

  • METABOLISM (2023) | Fundraiser for Gaza

    Fri 17 Oct, 18:45 - 20:15
    Trocadero Projects, Footscray

Enjoy an experiential gallery screening of ‘METABOLISM’, an enigmatic film-essay by award-winning local artist Eugenia Lim.

Filmed around Werribee’s Western Treatment Plant, this breathtaking meditation considers the interdependencies between human and more-than-human bodies and the consumption, colonisation and capitalisation of land.

Followed by a talk by the filmmaker.

All proceeds from this screening will be donated to the APHEDA Gaza Appeal.

  • People, Place, Planet shorts

    Sat 18 Oct, 11:00 - 12:40
    Palace Kino

Exploring ideas of urban living, city nature, and how humans and our environment are intertwined, ‘People, Place, Planet shorts’ offers a unique perspective on environmental cinema.

Through film poetry, dance, experimental art, documentary, and the journey of a plane tree being moved 72 meters in Milan, these films ask us to reconsider what our environment means to us and what we mean to our environment.

Followed by a filmmaker panel, discussing what it means to make environmental cinema in Australia in 2025.

  • These Sacred Hills (2024)

    Sat 18 Oct, 13:10 - 14:55

Facing an existential threat from a proposed green energy project, the Rock Creek Band of the Yakama Nation fights to protect their sacred sites and cultural resources. In a last-ditch effort to be heard, they open their community and reveal parts of their sacred culture for the first time.

Presented in partnership with Monash University, this screening will include a selection of shorts by Aboriginal action group, Original Power.

This session will be followed by a panel on energy, First Nations sovereignty, and justice.

  • The World According to My Dad (2023)

    Sat 18 Oct, 16:00 - 17:35
    Palace Kino

A documentary capturing the joint dream of a material physicist and his artist daughter for an effective solution to save the planet. Together, and with humour, they venture into many different platforms where no one is expecting or welcoming of them. On their journey, they try to navigate their way not only around the world of climate politics and the powers behind it but also with each other.

A strong personal story, Jiří’s humor and charisma, Marta’s original songs, raw film material and an inspiring idea to save the planet create an unmissable film with a potential planetary social impact.

Join us after the film in the Kino Foyer for a community gathering, to discuss the film

  • Elwood Beach Clean-up

    Sun 19 Oct, 11:00 - 13:00
    Elwood Beach

We’re stepping out of the cinema to connect with Country, through a beach clean at Elwood Beach, in partnership with 3184 Beach Patrol.

Join us in turning climate anxiety into climate action, through a relaxed and social litter pick.

  • No More History Without Us (2024)

    Thu 23 Oct, 18:45 - 20:15
    Wildflower Video Bar

In a world oversaturated with greenwashing, a filmmaker from the Amazon region picks up her camera to tell the rainforest’s true story. This manifesto-film dismantles colonial narratives that have shaped the Amazon as a land of abundance, exposing the violence and prejudice tied to its exploitation. From Munich to Belém, it delves into how the concept of a “demographic void” and the portrayal of a primitive territory have fueled racism and inequality.

Winner of the 2024 Environmental Film Festival (FICA) in Brazil for Best Feature Film and the 2024 Bali International Film Festival (Balinale) for Best Documentary Film.

Includes exclusive pre-recorded video from the filmmakers. Join us after the screening for a community catch up.
